For spouses, parents, and caretakers of children, keeping loved ones healthy is a full-time job! Check out these ten tips to make your family healthier and happier today!

Cut the Sugars
On average, US children consume 19 teaspoons of added sugar daily! These sugars largely come from soda, fruit-flavored drinks, sports drinks, cakes, kids cereals, and cookies. Make sure to look at the labels and don’t allow high sugar foods into your pantry. This could help avoid potentially unhealthy weight gain in your children.

Exercise for Fun
Like adults, kids need exercise and lots of it! Regular exercise has many benefits for children and can help them feel less stressed, sleep better at night, as well as keep a healthy immune system. Most children need at least an hour of physical activity every day. To make exercise fun for your kids, try these tips:

• Have fun activities outdoors (i.e., soccer/hockey net, play area, colorful toys, etc.)
• Exercise as a family
• Create different “play stations” in your home
• Keep it colorful
• Play fun music
• Take exercise classes for kids and toddlers
• Mommy meet-ups in the park

Sleep for Energy
Your body and your brain need sleep. Most kids between 5 and 12 need on average about 9.5 hours a night, but experts agree that most need 10 or 11 hours each night. Sleep is an individual thing, and some kids need more than others.

More Family Time
One of the most important things you can do to have a healthier family is to spend quality time with your children. When spending time with your children, share your values, beliefs, and plans with your child. Talking with and listening to your child creates healthy family bonds from an early age and beyond.

Limit Electronics
Even though technology can provide our children and us with wonderful opportunities, it can also have adverse effects on our health and well-being. Limiting screen time throughout the week can create more time for the family and/or opportunities to play games outside. Try also to limit your own screen time and do your best to create non-tech centered activities for the entire family.

Keep Up With Your Appointments
Whether it’s the dentist, chiropractor, pediatrician or dermatologist, make sure to keep up-to-date with your children’s healthcare team. Not only can you prevent future health mishaps, but you can also create trusted sources for when you have questions or concerns about the health of your family.

Greens for Every Meal
Having greens such as broccoli, spinach, kale, bok choy, and peas, can have huge health benefits for your children. Green leafy vegetables are very nutrient-dense and incredibly healthy. They are a vital source of antioxidants along with providing essential vitamins and minerals to your family’s diet. Start introducing green veggies at an early age and continue having them as a staple in your household.

Family Travel Getaways
Travel can provide your family with great learning experiences as well as a stress relief from the work/school week. Family travel getaways do not have to be expensive. A day trip to museums, camping, fishing, festivals, hiking trip, or a drive to a new town can provide your children with plenty of ways to learn new skills, exercise, and experience different things.

Keeping Clean & Organized
Keeping a clean and organized house can seem impossible if you have a family with children. But studies have shown, cleaning your home can lead to a happier, healthier, and overall calmer environment for you and your family. Not only does it help with clutter and the chaos of toys and laundry, keeping an organized and clean dust-free (as much as you can) environment can prevent issues with asthma, reduce the passing of colds, as well as it can decrease the spread dangerous bacteria.

Water, Water, Water!
Water is one of the body’s most essential nutrients. Water has many important functions in the body, including; regulating your body’s temperature, digesting food, and excreting waste. Get your child in the habit early on by scheduling frequent beverage breaks throughout the day. Not only will it keep them hydrated, but it will keep their bodies fueled during activity.
