Ask Moss: Summer Readiness Ideas

Dear Moss Building & Design,

I feel like this winter has put my home through the wringer. But now I’m thinking our spring will fly by and summer will be here very soon. What should I be considering with summer approaching soon?

— Dulles Mom

Dear Dulles Mom,

We can assure you that we all feel the same way and that we are all grateful for spring! But yes, warmer weather will be here before we know it. We suggest the following to help your home stay at a comfortable temperature during the warmer months:

1. Have your HVAC unit checked, both internally and externally, to be sure it will be running at its most efficient when needed.

2. Make sure your ceiling fans are switched so the blades are pushing the cool air down into the rooms. If you flipped the small switch on the base of the fan for the winter, be sure to turn it back!

3. Check the weather stripping around your doors and windows. In the colder months, this can tend to crack or break. Your doors and windows will not close as tightly if this is the case, and cold air will be able to get out.

4. Install an attic exhaust fan. When the outside temperature reaches a certain point, the fan will kick on, and help to cool your home dramatically – especially your upstairs bedrooms, by up to almost 10 degrees.

We hope these tips help as you transition from the long winter to spring and summer!
