Dear Moss Building & Design,

How can I hang pictures on my rock-hard plaster walls?

— Dulles Mom

Dear Dulles Mom,

This is a tough one! Older homes had walls that were plastered in a few different ways: over wood lath; over rock lath or with huge 16×48 sheets of drywall; or over wire lath. Back then, walls were then finished with three coats of plaster that dried as hard as a rock. Hooks with nails won’t go in easily. You’d have to chip out a hole and nail into the space. But then you’d have to spend a long time repairing the (potentially) cracked plaster around the hole, patch it, etc. The best option would be using hooks that attach with adhesive. These days there are good options at Home Depot and Lowe’s. Unfortunately, there’s not an easy answer for this one!
