Ask Moss: Basement Finishing

Dear Moss Building & Design,

We’d like to finish our basement but have no idea how to get started – there are so many options! Can you help?

— Dulles Mom

Dear Dulles Mom,

Absolutely! Moss is known for basement finishing. Before you start the process, think about what sort of space you want – in addition to the basic finishing (floors, walls, lighting, etc.) do you want to have a separate play room for younger children? Or do you want to have a space dedicated to a more teenage hang-out with a pool table or ping pong table? Do you want to have a tv and/or create a media room – does your family enjoy watching movies together? Would it be good to include a bar or a fridge/eating area for snacks or entertaining? What about a bathroom? Also, do you want an extra bedroom in the basement?

We suggest thinking about your vision for your basement and writing your lists of wishes and “must haves.” Then prioritize them. We have basement designers on staff who can talk you through the process and will work with any budget to help you finish a basement that works for your family. Moss also helps in the steps that involve permits, etc. Here’re some links to basements that Moss has finished – check out these photos!
