Dear Moss Building & Design,

My kitchen is dark and feels closed in. What are some ways that it could be brightened up?

— Dulles Mom

Dear Dulles Mom,

Great question! It is always nice to have a bright, filled room, especially on mornings when the kids need to get up and get going. Some suggestions that MOSS has, if you are considering remodeling or updating your kitchen, include:

  • More natural light: if you have a small window into your kitchen, consider a larger one that would let in more light. Yes, this is a big change, but, one that would benefit the room as a whole.
  • Install recessed lighting: consider adding recessed lights throughout the ceiling in the kitchen.
  • Under cabinet lights: brighten up the lower walls and counter tops with small under cabinet lights. Have them on a dimmer switch.
  • Paint: take some time to look at your color choices and preferences as well as how natural light hits your kitchen throughout the day. Consider choosing a color that is lighter.

Good luck with making your kitchen brighter and better!
