Scouts: Earn a Mental Health Awareness Patch

Calendar > Scout Events & Opportunities > In Partnership with Scouting Events & Activities in NOVA

Hoping to reduce the stigma of mental illness, International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF) has created the Mental Health Awareness Patch, which can be earned by the Girl Scouts as well as other scouting organizations. As 1 in 4 people in the US are diagnosed with a mental illness, the special partnership between IBPF and the Girl Scouts recognizes the important, and positive impact, these troops have in their communities as well as the commitment the organization has to the health and well-being of girls.

Through a variety of activities and topics focused on the brain and mental health, Girl Scouts are asked to complete a packet (found online here) in order to earn the badge. The program covers mental health discrimination, famous achievers with mental illness, research, and even anti-stigma campaign activities to provide support and fight for change. Included activities are appropriate for all Girl Scout age brackets.

Once complete, troop leaders should contact IBPF directly following the steps listed in the online packet. Patches are provided directly from the IBPF at no cost and sent within one week. To learn more about earning this patch and to see how your troop can make a difference, please click here.
