Dear Dr. Barakat,

My son still has three baby teeth left. Should I wait until they are all out before seeing an orthodontist? They can’t do anything, anyways, while there are still baby teeth in his mouth, right?

Dear Concerned Parent,

You would be surprised at all of the things an orthodontist can do while your child still has baby teeth! Even though most orthodontic treatment begins between age 9 and 14, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child gets a check-up no later than age 7. At this age, orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth that are easier to correct when found early.

These early treatments could help prevent more serious problems from developing later or may make later treatment shorter and less complicated. Alternatively, your child may also be placed in a holding phase and checked periodically to see how teeth are moving, and the mouth is growing. Either way, don’t let baby teeth keep you from getting that initial free consultation!
