Dear Dr. Barakat,

My daughter’s teeth look fine to me. Why should I see an orthodontist?

— Concerned Parent

Dear Concerned Parent,

Orthodontics is more than creating that perfect smile. It’s about managing a malocclusion (a bite that is off), limiting bacteria found around crowded teeth, working with growth to optimize oral health. Regular observation by an orthodontist can also detect permanent changes that begin to occur with habits such as severe mouth breathing, thumb sucking, grinding or clenching teeth. When your upper and lower teeth fit together the way they should, it is easier to bite, chew and speak.
