Congratulations! You have made the big decision to buy a new home. I am sure you have thought about what kinds of things you may want in this new home – most people have a list of “must-haves.”

There are some choices you may not have of thought of though. Below is a list of some of the bigger options you have when deciding to move. You should make a list of your answers to the eight questions below and then rank which are the most important to you. Bonus points if you can make your answers match your partner (if you are moving with someone else)! Bigger bonus points if your wish list matches your budget!

What price range are you looking to buy in?
The best thing you can do before looking at any homes is getting yourself pre-qualified. Knowing what you can afford will make the process easier and possibly prevent disappointment.

What type of communities do you prefer to live in, and what is your desired location?
Are you looking for a big neighborhood? HOA or no HOA? Homes close together or more spread out?

What type of home are you looking for?
Condominium? Townhouse? Single-family? Rural?

How important is the size of the home you are looking for?
Do you have an ideal number of bedrooms or bathrooms? Is there a square footage number you would like to reach? How important is having a finished basement?

What kind of lot are you looking for?
Is a large backyard important to you or do you prefer low maintenance? Is there a direction you want to face or prefer a certain sun exposure?

What type of layout are you looking for?
Open concept is very popular these days, but many people still prefer a compartmentalized home.

Is there a particular architectural style you prefer?
There are several options: Colonial, rambler, split level, etc…

What amenities and additional features are you looking for in your new community?
Are things like a pool, tennis courts, or parks important? Or are you more interested in being close to shopping and restaurants? Do you want to walk places or is driving to run your errands ok?
