After the Air Conditioning Quits & Before the Repairs Happen

<< More From Moss Building & Design

Dear Moss Building & Design,

Our air conditioning seems to be on its last legs…what if it goes out unexpectedly before we can get it fixed? Any tips on surviving the hot summer days and nights?

Dear Dulles Mom,

We understand! Losing air conditioning over the summer is everyone’s worst nightmare. But, there are some tried and true “old school” ways to keep cool that won’t break your bank!

• Create cross breezes in rooms — put box fans in windows on both sides of a room
• Keep your blinds closed to keep rooms dark and cooler
• Sleep in your basement — if that’s not an option, put your sheets in the freezer (in a plastic bag!) for a few minutes before bed to help you fall asleep
• Make sure your ceiling fan is rotating counter-clockwise to draw the hot air up
• Put a container of ice in front of a box fan to cool off the room
• Wear light, loose, cotton clothing
• Use your hot water bottle as a cooling pack — fill it with water and stick it in the freezer

There are so many ways to keep cool when your air conditioning is out — remember that it is temporary. And before the unit totally goes out, remember to have it serviced and/or replaced!
