Dear Moss Building & Design,
Now that the temperatures are dropping, what should I check into around the house to make sure my family is comfortable?
Dear Dulles Mom,
Great question, especially with the drop in temperatures we recently had here in Northern Virginia. First and foremost, you’ll want to make sure your heating system is functioning properly. Additionally, test both your smoke detectors (you should have one in each bedroom and on each floor of your home) and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure that batteries are replaced. If you use space heaters in any rooms, make sure they are kept a safe distance from your small children.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, colder months see an increase of indoor fires, so be aware and practice safety with your family (and discuss the importance of an exit plan from your home). Finally, you can ensure your family is comfortable all winter, even in the event of a power outage, by installing a whole-home generator. Moss is always available to check these items should a homeowner indicate that they would like a professional to evaluate their heating system(s).
