Does My Child Need a Permanent Retainer After Braces Their Come Off?

<< More From Barakat Orthodontics

Dear Dr. Barakat,

Does my child need a permanent retainer after braces come off?

Dear Concerned Parent,

There are several types of retainers out there. Your orthodontist will determine which one works best for your child’s bite. A permanent retainer can be an excellent choice for a patient who started with a lot of crowding or is not likely to be good at wearing a removable retainer regularly. A permanent retainer is a small, thin, custom-made wire that is cemented to the inside of the patient’s bottom teeth. It is not visible to others, and you don’t have to worry about it getting lost. It is important to keep in mind, though, that proper hygiene and care of the retainer is key in its longevity, and that as with anything, it can occasionally require maintenance if it becomes loose.

Whether you have a permanent or removable retainer, the most important thing is to wear and care for your retainer as your orthodontist instructs. Wearing your retainer will help ensure your beautiful smile lasts a lifetime.
