If Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon is part of your little one’s bedtime routine, then a trip to the Torpedo Factory Art Center will be a delightful family opportunity! But hurry, you only have until March 13, 2022!

Founded in an old munitions plant in the 1970s, the Torpedo Factory Art Center is home to the nation’s largest collection of working artists’ open studios under one roof. Your family is invited there to see a thoughtful 3-dimensional re-creation of the iconic bedroom illustrated in Goodnight Moon! Conceived and built by artist Lisa Schumaier and artist collaborators (Chris Cardellino, Marcel Artes Deolazo, Judy Heiser, Tracie Griffith Tso, and Jenae Michelle), you’ll see kittens with mittens, a cow jumping over the moon painting, a cozy fireplace, and so much more! This immersive installation brings this almost 75-year-old book to life!

Via the Torpedo Factory Art Center:

“The Good Night Moon Room is a literary hug for these days when we are all feeling on edge. There is also a nod to the importance of reading to keep our world safe. The bookshelf is full of banned books from local booksellers The Company of Books and Orchises Press.”

As an adult who likely was read the book as a child, many are surprised to hear that Goodnight Moon, published in 1947, was banned from the New York Public Library for more than 25-years! As noted in this article, “influential New York Public Library children’s librarian Anne Carroll Moore disliked the story so much when it was published in 1947 that the Library didn’t carry it …until 1972.”

To learn more about Anne Carroll Moore and her problem with the book, read Slate’s How One Librarian Tried to Squash Goodnight Moon.
