Interfaith Learning & Activism Camp is hosted by Green Muslims, a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization working to connect people of all faith perspectives to nature and environmental activism.

This year Green Muslims, together with Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions, Interfaith Power and Light, the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia, and the Sanctuaries, invites children for an exciting interfaith adventure, where campers explore the outdoors and its role in our lives, including learning about the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Campers, ages 8 to 13, will explore why nature, in general, and the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, in particular, are important to us and what we can do to connect with them and protect the earth.

Sign up for one camp, or all six! Once registered, campers will receive details on where to meet for each; carpooling options are available for select days.

Introduction to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Part 1
June 23, 2019
Hosted at Whitehall Farm, Clifton, VA
While parents attend a presentation on environmental stewardship, campers will discuss the role of nature in their lives and personal faith perspectives. They will receive introductory training from a “Leave No Trace” representative before going on an exploratory hike. Campers will also learn how watersheds work and how we all impact the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Camp will conclude with a period of reflection and a hayride back to Whitehall Farm’s market.

Introduction to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Part 2
June 30, 2019
Hosted at Hard Bargain Farm, Accokeek, MD
Campers will examine the workings of an environmentally-friendly local farm, participate in a habitat hike, and explore the natural environment surrounding Hard Bargain Farm. Camp will conclude with a trash cleanup along the Potomac River, where students will see first-hand how trash makes it from the land to our creeks, the Potomac River, the Chesapeake Bay, and ultimately, the Atlantic Ocean.

Art in Nature

Hosted at Whitehall Farm, Clifton, VA
Teachers from “Sanctuaries,” a local interfaith group of artists, will lead campers on a nature hike where they will collect natural objects for an art project.

Environmental Stewardship & Sustainable Farming
July 14, 2019
Hosted at Whitehall Farm, Clifton, VA
Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions will speak about environmental activism, where campers will learn ways they can start projects or get involved with other organizations to bring about real climate solutions. They will also get a formal tour of Whitehall Farm, where they learn about the specific steps Whitehall takes to keep its produce natural and protect the surrounding environment. Camp will conclude with a discussion of and reflection on the benefits of the farming practices of small, local, environmentally friendly farms.

Invasive Plant Removal
July 21, 2019
Hosted at Theodore Roosevelt Island, Washington, DC
Campers will learn from a National Park Service representative why invasive plants are so damaging to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Campers will also perform community service by helping remove them. Parents are welcome to join this educational, environmental action project.

Educational Hike

A Master Naturalist will lead campers on an educational hike; parents are also invited to participate.
