Dear Moss Building & Design,
How can I protect my home this winter?
Dear Dulles Mom,
While there are many ways to prepare for winter, one of the main things to keep in mind is your roof. Though usually not a problem during a mild winter, ice dams can wreak havoc on your roof. Ice dams occur due to heat loss in your attic, melting the snow that’s on your roof. The melted snow then runs down, but freezes at the roof’s edge, creating a dam. Then the melted snow pools behind the dam and leaks through the roof.
How do you prevent this? Minimize heat loss in your attic and update your insulation. By making sure your attic is properly insulated, and heat is not escaping into the crawl space, you minimize your risk of ice dams (Not to mention you keep the heat where it’s needed). Attics account for almost 30 percent of heat loss, so if you think your problematic attic could use some professional help, contact Moss Building & Design today.
