The Ickabog, by JK Rowling, Available Online (Free!) –

Harry Potter author JK Rowling is publishing The Ickabog, a new fairy tale story for children!

Available online, chapter-by-chapter, children can read it for free. As of June 1, 2020, readers can access the first 11 chapters, with new installments until July 10, 2020. For sale in print later this year (with all royalties donated to help people who have been affected by the coronavirus), Rowling has made the online version free to keep children’s (and adult’s) imaginations alive while stuck at home during the pandemic.

Rowling states, “The Ickabog is a story about truth and the abuse of power. To forestall one obvious question: the idea came to me well over a decade ago, so it isn’t intended to be read as a response to anything that’s happening in the world right now. The themes are timeless and could apply to any era or any country.”

Rowling is also inviting children around the world to illustrate her story as it unfolds. Parents and guardians can enter their children’s artwork into an official Ickabog Illustration Competition run by her publishers. Rowling won’t be judging the competition (each publisher will decide what works best for their editions). However, if you would like to share your child’s artwork on Twitter using the hashtag #TheIckabog, she’ll able to see it (and maybe share and comment on it)!
