Incorporating Tile, Inspired by Wood, in Your Home

Dear Moss Building & Design,

I’m looking to re-do the flooring in my basement. I need something durable — to hold up to many years of wear and tear by kids and pets — but also want to make sure we’re keeping up with the latest trends. What would you recommend?

— Dulles Mom

Dear Dulles Mom,

At Moss Building & Design, we’re always keeping a finger on the pulse of design trends in home remodeling. One thing that we’re commonly seeing is an increased use of tile that looks like wood. Whether it’s porcelain or LVT (luxury vinyl tile), the wood-look trend is everywhere these days.

On our blog here, you can see a gorgeous bathroom in Vienna, VA, in which our client truly embraced this wood trend for their floors and shower walls. Using porcelain tile that looks incredibly like hardwood, the design and use of this tile showcase our client’s taste and decor style. It stunningly creates a calming, almost outdoorsy backdrop feeling for anyone who uses the bathroom or shower. Plus, it holds up against moisture and humidity that you might find in a bathroom or even a basement.

Remodeling with Luxury Vinyl Tile

Another flooring trend, especially in spaces that are heavily trafficked, is Luxury Vinyl Tile, better known as LVT. Coming in a range of colors, this tile bears a striking resemblance to hardwood and is incredibly durable.

In addition, it’s affordable. In places like a basement, kitchen, or family room, LVT flooring is a great option to consider as it’s impervious to water damage and doesn’t scratch easily, unlike actual hardwood flooring.

Tile Size & Shape Options

The great part about choosing a wood-look tile, whether porcelain or LVT, is that options vary. Choose panel shapes, single vinyl sheets, or parquet-sized pieces depending on your tastes. Installation is relatively simple; within a few days, you’ll have an entirely new look.

Wood-look flooring burst onto the scene with a force, but remember that not all tile is created equal.
