Keeping Moisture In Dry Rooms

<< More From Moss Building & Design

Dear Moss Building & Design,

I’m worried about my baby’s room not being comfortable for her with the drier months, especially when she has a cold. What do you recommend?

Dear Dulles Mom,

Making your house less dry in the winter is good for everyone.

We recommend buying humidifiers for the bedrooms that you specifically want to make more comfortable. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for filling with water, room placement for safety, etc., then plug in to enjoy a mist that increases air humidity levels. Also, definitely follow the cleaning protocol the manufacturer recommends to avoid dirt and/or mold build-up.

You can also go the old-fashioned route of filling shallow pans with water and placing them on your heating vents, near sunny windows, or anywhere that is a flat, protected surface — the heat and sun will help evaporate the water and increase the room’s humidity.

Again, with both the electronic humidifiers and the old-fashioned methods, be sure to be vigilant about cleaning and disinfecting to avoid mess and dirt build-up.
