Parent Encouragement Program (PEP) is a nonprofit, educational organization that provides classes both in-person and online to parents and all who care for children, toddlers through teens. Join them on November 17, 2022, for a free webinar: Talking with Kids about Social Media & Mental Health.

While we know that tech use and social media help children connect with their peers, it is also clear that social media can create a cycle of seeking approval and a downward spiral of loneliness, anxiety, and depression for tweens and teens whose positive sense of self comes through validation from others.

Devorah Heitner, Ph.D., an expert on young people’s relationships with digital media and technology and author of Screenwise, explains the importance of “mentoring over monitoring” when it comes to kids’ tech use and gives advice on how to encourage a healthy relationship with media and technology. Her forthcoming book, Growing Up in Public, is a guide to navigating reputation, privacy, and boundaries with our kids who are growing up in a world where it feels like everyone is watching.
