Preparing Your Home for the Cold

Dear Moss Building & Design,

Now that the weather is getting slightly colder, what are some tips for weatherproofing my house for the coming winter months?

Dear Dulles Mom,

Planning is a great thing, and that is especially true when it comes to your home and the winter.

First, have a professional check your roof for any potential leaks or critters that might have made a home in your attic over the summer months. Definitely think about having your gutters cleaned as well — before and after the fall foliage!

Second, think about your windows and doors. Could you potentially be losing heat through cracks or ill-fitting portions? Your heating bill will be much more manageable if you seal those cracks or think about installing new, energy-efficient windows and doors.

Third, take a walk around your home and check your foundation. If there are any cracks, definitely hire a professional to come and take a look. And while you’re outside, remember that before it freezes outside, you should turn OFF your outside water lines. You absolutely do not want any frozen pipes during the winter!

Good luck preparing your home for the drop in temperature this winter!
