The Russian School of Mathematics (RSM) is an award-winning K-12 math program that encourages students to ask “why?” and not just “how?” With three locations in Northern Virginia, you can find them in Ashburn, Herndon, and Tysons Corner. Their programs include afterschool opportunities, summer camps and classes, and year-round enrichment and skill-building programs.
RSM uses the rigorous study of mathematics to develop students’ math fluency, intellect, and character. Their students are guided to think about mathematics logically and conceptually, building deep connections between concepts, all in an environment of their peers that keeps them consistently challenged! They invite you to learn more and schedule a free evaluation.
This summer, the Russian School of Mathematics invites your child to reinforce and learn new math skills. 2023 summer opportunities include:
Preschool-Grade 2
Kindergarten Prep • Grade 1 Prep • Grade 2 Prep
Rising KG-Grade 2
These courses use RSM’s unique methodology to work with rising 1st through 3rd graders on the development of their abstract thinking and reasoning ability. We spark an early interest in mathematics by exploring numbers and the connections between them, studying geometric shapes, practicing math language development, and developing problem-solving skills.
Advanced Topics & Competitions 2
Rising Grade 2
Challenge and prepare your child entering 2nd Grade for competitions like the Math Kangaroo. Have fun with non-standard problems requiring clever solutions. This course is perfect for those students who enjoy and seek out math challenges and who wish to explore non-standard questions.
Grades 3-5
Grade 3 Prep
Rising Grade 3
This course allows rising 3rd graders to explore abstract concepts in an intuitive way. Students will begin to develop reasoning skills and explore and build a foundation in mathematical concepts such as operations with numbers and the connections between them, strategies for problem-solving, and geometric shapes.
Advanced Topics & Competitions 3
Rising Grade 3
Challenge and prepare your child entering 3rd grade for national and international math competitions like the Math Kangaroo. Have fun with non-standard problems requiring clever solutions. This course is perfect for those students who enjoy and seek out math challenges and who wish to explore non-standard questions.
Advanced Topics & Competitions 4
Rising Grades 3-4
Challenge and prepare your child entering 3rd and 4th Grades for national and international math competitions like the Math Kangaroo. Have fun with non-standard problems requiring clever solutions. This course is perfect for those students who enjoy and seek out math challenges and who wish to explore non-standard questions.
Grade 4 Prep
Rising Grade 4
This course uses RSM’s unique approach to work with rising 4th graders to develop their ability to use logic to reason through problems. Students will expand and apply their knowledge of operations, and discover the secrets of mental calculations. They will be challenged to apply their foundational knowledge of operating with numbers to composite problems and word problems.
Grade 5 Prep
Rising Grade 5
This course is designed to guide rising 5th graders to use logic to reason through problems. Students get ahead of the tracking that awaits them in middle school by developing their reasoning skills, advancing in efficient mental calculations, operating with signed numbers and fractions, and exploring early algebra. Special attention is given to word problems.
Advanced Topics & Competitions 5
Rising Grade 5
Challenge and prepare your child entering grades 5 for math competitions like the Math Kangaroo and MOEMS E and gain essential skills to start preparing for the AMC-8. While covering many topics, the focus is to teach students how to approach combinatorics, word, and logic problems. An important element is the development of critical thinking and creativity. Special attention is paid to developing students’ mental math ability, which is a vital skill for success in various math contests. The curriculum incorporates in-class competitions, games, and other activities to make learning active and engaging for students. Time constraints are added often so that students can practice thinking quickly and cleverly, as they will be expected to do in a real math competition.
Middle & High School
Pre-Algebra Prep
Rising Grade 6 (Recommended)
This course will develop students’ problem-solving strategies by working with a variety of word problems often under-represented in traditional school curricula. Overall concepts covered in this course include divisibility, expressions involving fractions, solving and modeling with equations, rational numbers, simplification, and introduction to number theory.
Algebra I Prep
Rising Grade 7 (Recommended)
This course covers the key topics of pre-algebra essentials (required for Algebra I in the Fall). Topics covered include the concept and applications of ratios, proportions, and percentages. Students begin exploring algebraic concepts, including linear and absolute value equations. Special attention is given to working with word problems often under-represented in traditional school curricula and modeling with equations.
IOWA Prep
Rising Grades 6-7
This course uses RSM’s unique methodology to prepare students for the algebra readiness assessment test. The course is designed to review and strengthen kids’ grasp of the topics that are essential for success. In addition, students will hone their test-taking skills by taking practice tests, where they will analyze and correct their mistakes with our experienced teachers.
Geometry II Prep
Rising Grade 7 (Recommended)
This is the first course in RSM’s three-year geometry sequence, which serves to develop a deep understanding of geometric concepts. This introductory course covers fundamental geometrical statements and includes a detailed study of triangles. Non-RSM students require an evaluation to join (knowledge of pre-algebra is required).
Algebra II Prep
Rising Grade 8 (Recommended)
This covers the key topics of Algebra I essentials. Topics covered include polynomials, factoring, equations and inequalities, including equations and inequalities with absolute values, and systems of linear equations. Students will master applying algebraic tools to word problems.
Advanced Topics 8
Rising Grade 8 (Recommended)
The Math Competition Summer Program is a six-week program (12 lessons) for students entering grade 8 who like to solve competition problems and want to improve their performance in math competitions like the AMC-8, Math Kangaroo, MOEMS-M, etc. The class focuses on topics that are of the utmost importance for students’ progress in competitions, including Number Theory, Combinatorics and Probability, Word Problems, and Geometry. The program includes in-class competitions, problems from real math competitions, math experiments, and other activities to make learning active and engaging for students. The course is appropriate for self-motivated students who can work independently (with the teacher’s guidance throughout the lessons). Evaluation or recommendation is required.
