Water Flossers vs Regular Flossing

<< More From Barakat Orthodontics

Dear Dr. Barakat,

I have seen water flossers recommended for children with braces. Do water flossers work as well as regular flossing?

Dear Concerned Parent,

Regular oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing, is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums for life! Water flossers can be an excellent choice for children and teenagers with braces or other orthodontic appliances.

As a mom, I know that getting your kids to floss daily can be a struggle — especially when wearing braces! One great benefit to the water flosser is that it can be easier and faster than flossing with dental floss or a floss threader. They can be effective in removing plaque and debris even brushing and manual flossing may miss. This reduces the bacteria between your teeth. Plus, a lot of kids find it even fun to use the water flosser!

There are many different choices on the market with options ranging in price, size, and design. Most water flossers range in price from $30-$60, and you’ll want to find one with an orthodontic tip. It is specially designed to help remove plaque that sticks to the brackets and between teeth. If the traditional flossing method just isn’t happening with you or your kids, this could be just what you need!
