Your Orthodontic Journey Next Step: A Retainer

<< More From Barakat Orthodontics

Congratulations on coming to the end of your orthodontic journey! Whether you wore braces or aligners, did you know that you still need to wear a clear retainer to maintain that beautiful smile?

While wearing braces or aligners was a phase of your orthodontic treatment, it wasn’t the final one. Retainers are the last step in your orthodontic journey to ensure continued success!

Your newly straightened teeth won’t be able to maintain their new positions without a placeholder (your retainer). In orthodontics, we call that retention, meaning that your teeth retain their position instead of gravitating back to their old places. Retainers work by holding the tissue where it has been moved. So over time, your teeth will adjust to their new positions with the help of the retainer.

Here are a few tips to ensure success with your new retainer:

• Wear your removable retainer as directed
• Clean your retainer using cool water to avoid warping
• Don’t wear your retainer while eating
• Keep your retainer in a sturdy case when you take them out (to protect them and so you don’t lose them!)
