Dear Dr. Barakat,
My 9-year-old’s top teeth are crooked. I thought they would be straight now since they are all permanent teeth. What do I do now?
Dear Concerned Parent,
It is ideal to see an orthodontist when your child is young, not because work should start, but so the orthodontist can evaluate the teeth and jaw development from an early age. This allows for opportunities to take advantage of a child’s growth where beneficial. Many children do not need early treatment, but some need early intervention for issues such as an uneven bite, overcrowding, thumb sucking, or speech concerns. During your consultation with the orthodontist, options will be discussed regarding the timing of treatment.
If you have any concerns about your child’s tooth alignment and bite, simply schedule an initial orthodontic consultation with an orthodontist. Typically during an initial consultation appointment, the orthodontist will perform an extensive examination, including x-rays and photographs. The orthodontist will then work with you to develop an orthodontic program that best enhances your child’s smile and dental development.
