Everyday Animal Adventures @ The National Zoo

February 3, 2024 @ 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

In the heart of the nation’s capital, the National Zoo isn’t just a place to see animals from across the globe, it’s an important institution of education, conservation, and research, too. Spanning 163 acres in the Rock Creek Park area of Washington, DC, the National Zoo has been a beloved destination for families since 1889!

Founded in 1889 and part of the Smithsonian Institution, it boasts more than 2,100 animals representing almost 400 different species, and you’ll find many in the zoo’s themed exhibits. A few popular ones include:

Africa Trail
Elephant Trails
Great Cats
Primates
Small Mammal House

Perhaps the most iconic residents of the zoo, the giant pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, are a must-see! Part of an international conservation effort, the National Zoo is one of the few places outside China where you can see them in person.

In addition to all the new animals your family will meet, enjoy all that the zoo has to offer. From food stands to cafes, there are plenty of dining options available. There are also plenty of fun, interactive opportunities! Kids are invited to play on the “Me and the Bee” playground, cool off in the “Squirt Zoo” (seasonal), and even ride a carousel (fee-based)!

The National Zoo is open year-round, and reaffirming its mission of providing an enriching and accessible experience for all, it’s free! However, free entry passes (link below) are required.
