At What Age Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

<< More From Barakat Orthodontics

Dear Dr. Barakat,

My dentist said kids don’t usually get braces until they are 12. If that’s the case, when should I schedule my child’s first appointment with an orthodontist?

Dear Concerned Parent,

Start early. It sounds reasonable to wait until their baby teeth fall out, but it is actually better to evaluate children when they still have a good portion of their baby teeth.

This is so the orthodontist can maximize the growth ahead and intervene when small problems can lead to bigger issues as more permanent teeth come in. Most kids do not require immediate treatment but will benefit from consistent regular observation as their permanent teeth erupt.
