The Washington DC Dragon Boat Festival returns on May 20, 2023, for its 20th festival and is ready to amaze and inform guests about the unique sport known as dragon boat racing.
The festival is held along the Potomac River and features cultural exhibitions, hands-on activities, arts & crafts, craft demonstrations, and of course…dragon boat racing!
The history of dragon boating begins in 278 BC, with the legend of Qu Yuan and the fisherman who came together to save Qu Yuan’s body from being eaten by fish in the Mei Lo River. The festival honors Qu Yuan’s sacrifice through cultural and athletic demonstrations, including eye dotting ceremonies, lion dances, and zhong zi (the rice thrown into the water to attract the fish).
