The Necessity of Orthodontic Evaluations in Young Children

<< More From Barakat Orthodontics

Dear Dr. Barakat,

My child is only 7-years-old — why do they need an orthodontic evaluation at such a young age?

Dear Concerned Parent,

Parents are encouraged to have their children evaluated by an Orthodontist at approximately age 7. This is so evolving tooth, and jaw issues can be addressed before they progress to the point where they could require extensive, lengthy, and sometimes painful treatment with limited results.

An early evaluation doesn’t necessarily mean your child will require early orthodontic treatment, but it can provide valuable information to determine when orthodontic treatment will be necessary. In addition, this allows you to plan ahead in partnership with your Dentist and Orthodontist and become familiar with payment plans and options.

Orthodontists are experts at detecting warning signs. Then, if needed, they can offer early treatment options that can lessen the impact of conditions like crowded, misplaced teeth, blocked-out teeth, crossbites, or misaligned jaws. An early evaluation and interceptive treatment can diminish the overall impact of these conditions and make future treatments more successful, with a beautiful smile to prove it!
