Enjoy Halloween Treats, While Keeping Your Smile Healthy

<< More From Barakat Orthodontics

With Halloween coming up, you might be wondering how your kids (or even yourself!) can enjoy all the treats of the season without impacting your family’s orthodontic treatment.

Barakat Orthodontics believes that enjoying yummy Halloween treats while wearing braces is absolutely an option, but you can avoid damaging orthodontic appliances (therefore slowing down treatment) by knowing which candy might damage brackets.

Grab your Halloween bag and make room for the good stuff while avoiding these candies:

• Caramels
• Taffy
• Hard or chewy candy (like Starbursts)
• Jellybeans
• Licorice
• Bubble gum
• Lollypops
• Sour candy
• Popcorn
• Nuts

Enjoy a few of these treats, but not too many:

• Chocolate (without caramel or nuts)
• Peanut butter cups
• KitKats
• 3 Musketeers
• Marshmallows
• Soft cookies

There’s no need to miss out on the trick-or-treating fun, but snack wisely! Eating too much sugar can cause it to accumulate around braces and lead to permanent white marks on your teeth (decalcification), cavities, or even gum disease (gingivitis). Plus, make sure to brush thoroughly around your braces, especially after indulging in sugary snacks.

If you use removable aligners (like Invisalign), make sure to remove your appliance when you enjoy your treats and then brush well before you put them back in your mouth! If you do find that a bracket has detached from the tooth, call your orthodontic office as soon as possible to get it repaired as quickly as possible (so your treatment isn’t affected).
