Dear Dr. Barakat,
My child’s front teeth stick out at an odd angle. Is this something we should see an Orthodontist about (she still has some baby teeth)?
Dear Concerned Parent,http://bit.ly/BKOProtrudingTeeth
Yes, protrusive front teeth (teeth that stick out) may be the outward sign of a problem with the jaw or position teeth position.
Even if your child has not lost all of her baby teeth, protrusive upper front teeth are more likely to be broken during playtime, sports, or in an accident. In addition, sometimes these teeth can go through the lip in an accident involving the mouth!
It’s important to address this for these obvious reasons and because children can develop self-esteem issues if others are teasing them about their teeth, which is not likely to self-correct.
Early orthodontic treatment, or Phase I Treatments, helps treat a child’s jaw, teeth, and smile — giving them confidence as they advance through school. Even in the early stages of orthodontic treatment, today’s technology allows your orthodontist to provide many treatment options such as traditional metal braces, clear braces, and Invisalign to give your daughter a great start towards her smile of a lifetime!
