Dear Dr. Barakat,

I remember having teeth pulled when I got braces years ago. My child is now 8, will she have to have teeth taken out as well?

Dear Concerned Parent,

I think it’s great that you are thinking about your child’s orthodontic treatment at 8-years-old! This gives her more treatment options.

Taking out teeth for braces was very common years ago. It was the only way to make space for the adult teeth, especially because years ago, patients were older teenagers, with little growth remaining. Nowadays, we have other options.

Although removing teeth to make space is still the only good option for some patients, others can avoid this by starting treatment early, expanding the jaws, managing the space in the mouth properly over time. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends getting a consultation with an orthodontist at age 7. This is to allow for a baseline exam and monitor changes over time. Many times, these initial consultations are at no charge, which makes it an easy way to see how your child’s teeth, mouth, and jaws are growing.
