Orthodontic Treatment for Bad Bites

<< More From Barakat Orthodontics

Dear Dr. Barakat,

I thought braces were only for teeth that weren’t straight. But I have heard about orthodontic treatment for bad bites. What does that mean?

Dear Concerned Parent,

You aren’t alone in thinking that braces are only for straightening teeth. Many people think that braces are only for kids or teenagers who have crooked teeth. In reality, orthodontists use braces to fix many different types of tooth issues, and many of them have to do with “bad bites.”

A bad bite, or what is technically known as a malocclusion, means any type of bite that doesn’t have good jaw alignment. The term can encompass multiple types of orthodontic issues, with the most commonly recognized being an overbite (when the upper teeth are pushed forward), an underbite (when the lower teeth are pushed forward), a crossbite (when teeth overlap each other), or an open bite (when the upper and lower teeth fail to make contact with each other).

When an orthodontist provides an initial consultation, one of the things that are examined in the patient’s bite, X-rays, dental impressions, and physical exams are all completed and analyzed by your orthodontist, who then creates a treatment plan that will be implemented to shift the teeth gently, and therefore the bite, into alignment. It is most important to align the bite for a patient, as a “bad bite” can lead to cracked teeth, headaches, or uneven teeth wear.

While orthodontists love to see a bright, beautiful smile on our patients’ faces, we love most to know that our patients have received excellent treatment that will keep their bite aligned and healthy for a lifetime.
