Playground
Renovated in 2023, this award-winning playground features one-of-a-kind replicas and hands-on elements that honor African Americans’ global impact and contributions. Its centerpiece, the Hall of Heroes, draws inspiration from the architecture of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC!

The playground has separate zones for younger children (ages 2-5) and older kids (ages 5-12), so toddlers can tackle their own slides, tunnels, and ramps while big kids conquer the towers.

  • Climb the nets strung across a replica of the Edmund Pettus Bridge
  • Explore a replica of the historic Cleveland Avenue bus (a nod to Rosa Parks and breaking barriers)
  • Scale a brick-style climbing wall with a cargo net
  • Race down a multi-story play structure packed with tall, twisty tube slides

Everything sits on a soft, rubber safety surface with ADA-compliant ramps throughout.

Douglass Dunes
Don’t miss Douglass Dunes! This open-air, beach-themed sand pit invites kids to dig, scoop, and build with sand diggers, plastic toys, and sand tables. There’s plenty of seating, shade (natural/umbrellas), and easy access to restrooms. Please note, the sand play area closes at 4 pm on Saturdays and is closed Sundays.

Beyond the playground, families will find basketball/multisport courts with adjustable hoops, a shaded picnic pavilion, paved walking paths, restrooms with changing stations, and free on-site parking. Grown-ups can settle into Adirondack chairs around the playground while the kids play.
