Father’s Day Train Rides

These events have passed, but check out our calendar for fun today, this week, this month!

Impress Dad this Father’s Day with the unique gift and unforgettable experience of a train ride on one of our area’s scenic railroads — invest in a day-trip that will produce memories for years to come!

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad | Cumberland, MD
Travel back through time on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR). On board, you’ll climb through the spectacular scenery of the Allegheny Mountains while a narrator provides you with information about the scenery, history, and culture along your route.

West Chester Railroad Company | West Chester, PA
West Chester Railroad hosts a special 90-minute Father’s Day train ride between Market Street in West Chester and the village of Glen Mills in Delaware County. This year, guests can purchase a lunch for the ride, and even take advantage of the railroad’s Father’s Day special — Dads are just $5!

The Strasburg Railroad | Ronks, PA
Step back in time aboard The Strasburg Railroad — a larger-than-life steam train that provides a 45-minute, round-trip ride through the tranquil Amish countryside to Paradise, PA and back. Upon disembarkment, you’ll enjoy the old-fashioned fun at Groff’s Grove or Leaman Place Grove, convenient recreation areas along the train’s route for mid-way boarding or unloading.

For families with younger children, consider Day Out With Thomas — a family event that offers children and their grownups the opportunity to ride with classic storybook friend Thomas the Tank Engine.

Steam Into History | New Freedom, PA
If Dad is a history buff, consider riding with the nonprofit, educational organization, Steam into History, which operates a steam train that chronicles the role York County, PA, played in Civil War history via a 2.5-hour round-trip journey to Hanover Junction and back.

The 1860’s replica locomotive and train set are a faithful recreation of the train Abraham Lincoln rode to present the Gettysburg Address and, two years later, carried his body in a funeral car. Each run has a narrator who is well versed in the history of the area, as well as Civil War History. Plus you might even get to see entertainers and re-enactors that are willing to share their stories on the Civil War!

Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad | Romney, WV
Give Dad the best of both worlds with one of the country’s most beautiful train rides along with a spectacular bald eagle spotting experience. For three hours enjoy a narrated excursion through a tranquil and pristine mountain valley that’s home to the American bald eagle. Undisturbed by the low rumblings of the occasional train, it is common to see the birds flying overhead or perched in nearby trees. Passengers will also be treated to views of historic farms and lush mountain greenery.

These train excursions are just a small sampling of train-lover opportunities. See our comprehensive list of our area’s train museums, model displays, trackless trains, mini-replica trains, full-size trains, excursions, and more here.
