Vacation Water Safety Tips

By Goldfish Swim School, May 2024

Summer will be here before you know it, which means months of water fun. Unfortunately, pool season sees an increase in drownings — the leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 4.

Whether your kids are swimming in the pool, lake, or even the ocean, now’s the perfect time to refresh all ages on water safety and etiquette:

  • Always Supervise Children
Never leave children unattended near water, even if they know how to swim. Active supervision is critical.
  • Use Life Jackets
In open water, on boats, or when learning to swim, children should wear properly fitted life jackets.
  • Establish Water Rules
Set specific rules for water environments, such as not running near the pool or pushing others into the water.
  • Check Water Depth
Teach children to check the water depth before entering to avoid shallow water accidents.
  • Avoid Drains
Instruct children to stay away from pool drains and other openings to avoid entrapment.
  • Learn CPR
Parents and caregivers should learn CPR and basic water rescue skills in emergencies.
  • Use the Buddy System
Always have children swim with a buddy and never alone, even at water destinations with a lifeguard.
  • Recognize Distress Signs
Teach children to recognize signs of someone in distress and to get help from an adult immediately.
  • Sign Up for Swim Lessons
Sign your child up for learn-to-swim lessons or, for established swimmers, lessons that reinforce skills and water safety. Swim lessons are found to reduce the risk of drowning by up to 88%!
