Night Sky Festival

CalendarAugust Events

View the night skies within Shenandoah National Park’s scenic and protected space! On August 9-11, 2019, visitors are invited to enjoy a variety of activities alongside astronomy experts, park rangers, and others at their Night Sky Festival.

Throughout the park, guests will find ranger talks, solarscope and telescope viewing, Junior Ranger Night Explorer programs, and even hands-on activities. All events are free and offer a unique experience for novice night sky observers.

While Shenandoah National Park may not get as dark as some of the Parks in the west or northern United States (check out this info on how dark skies are rated), its high elevation, combined with its relative remoteness from dense urban areas, make the park a great place to engage in stargazing on the east coast!

Plus, did you know the park is also a great place to spot the International Space Station as it crosses the night sky? Click here to check on upcoming dates, not only from the park, but from your community, too!
