Overwhelmed by the Thought of Remodeling With a Young Family?
<< More From Moss Building & Design

Dear Moss Building & Design,
I want to remodel my kitchen, but I’m terrified to get started because I have two young kids. Do you have any tips to alleviate my fear or help me plan for this big undertaking?
Dear Dulles Mom,
The prospect of any home remodel can fill you with equal parts excitement and dread. If you have young children and are considering a home remodel, those feelings are likely even more heightened. But, don’t fear. With Moss Building & Design, we’re with you every step of the way to make the process as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
Approach the process as you do all your other Mom tasks: make lists.
Make lists, prioritize, do your research, and then go out and make decisions. It may not be easy having to tote kids along, but you can try to make everything as fun as possible. Empower yourself and know that you can do whatever you need to do to get things done. Luckily, with Moss Building & Design, you’ll also have team members helping you all along the way. Your Project Manager and Project Designer will help you organize the project, communicate with on-site contractors, and make all your selections from appliances to hardware.
Will I survive without a full kitchen?
Yes, you can! The experts at Moss Building & Design can help plan on moving your old refrigerator to an accessible location, like a basement. With that, a toaster oven, a crockpot, and a good deal of microwaveable meals, you can make it through. The team will also work with you to plan a thorough timeline to know what to expect and when which can help with planning.
How will my child(ren) nap with all the noise?
Your kids might adapt more easily to napping in other locations than you’d expect. Try to move a Pack ‘n Play or crib to the house’s quietest room and use all your mom tricks: a dark room, noise machine, soothing downtime routine, etc. Plan outings for the particularly noisy days your Moss Building & Design Project Manager can warn you about in advance. A few car naps or naps-on-the-go might make for some temporary sleep bumps, but will be worth it in the long run when your project is completed.
But, won’t it take forever? We’ll never see “normal” again.
It won’t take forever. It can’t. The contractors have other jobs that they will need to get to eventually! The remodel time frame is an adventure — some days are easier to manage than others. But the final result will be worth it. With Moss Building & Design, you can follow your project online in real-time using our Moss Building & Design online proprietary project management and communication tool. We promise your new kitchen, dining room, or other remodeled area will be a better use of space, make your home more updated, and help home resale value down the line.
What about my pets? Are they considered part of the family too?
Moss Building & Design has very thorough and careful about your pets during any remodel. Before anything starting on your home, you will have a meeting with your Project Manager to go over all the details of how the project will be secured to keep your animals safe and content. We are committed to making the remodel as non-disruptive as possible.
