Chincoteague Island Pony Swim

Chincoteague Island, best known for its wild ponies, is home to one of the most iconic wildlife events on the East Coast — the world-famous Chincoteague Pony Swim. Join them July 25-31, 2026!

Rooted in tradition and local heritage, this breathtaking spectacle features the Saltwater Cowboys guiding a herd of wild ponies and their foals from neighboring Assateague Island across the Assateague Channel to Chincoteague. This annual event is vital to managing the size of the wild herd and keeping it healthy and sustainable. When the sun goes down, spectators can head over to the nightly Chincoteague Fireman’s Carnival for rides, games, and famous local seafood!
