Take a Step Back in Time @ Dino Walk

This opportunity is over; visit our calendar for up-to-date fun!

From September 22-23, 2023, you’re invited to journey back in time, over 200 million years to be exact, at Dino Walk!

What makes this particular event so special? It’s your chance to see something unique to not only Virginia, but the entire continent!

Annually, the Museum of Culpeper History partners with Luck Stone Quarry so you can see Culpeper’s famous Triassic Period dinosaur footprints. Discovered in 1989, this rocky destination boasts the largest number of dinosaur footprints in North America!

According to the VMNH Paleontology Lab, “About 2,000 footprints are preserved across a large slab of siltstone. Many footprints are from theropod dinosaurs, with their characteristic three-toed feet.”

They add, “Some are even preserved well enough to see the mark of the claw on the big middle toe.”

It’s great news that these footprints can be seen so close to home! To see the largest collection of dinosaur footprints, you’d have to travel thousands of miles to Australia! These footprints, now exposed on a 50-mile stretch of coastline in Western Australia, come from at least 11, and possibly as many as 21 different kinds of dinosaurs.

Admission to Dino Walk is by vehicle (passenger van size or smaller) and includes entry to the Museum of Culpeper History, too!
