Mount Vernon Candlelight Tours & Christmas Illuminations

These events have passed, but check out our calendar for fun today, this week, this month!

More than 85 million people have visited George Washington’s Mount Vernon since it officially opened to the public in 1860 — many during the holidays! Celebrate this year at George Washington’s Mount Vernon with special illumination events ideal for the whole family:

Nov 23-Dec 16, 2018
Mt. Vernon Candlelight Tours
A candlelit tour, complete with characters, caroling, and even 18th-century dancing await you this year on select dates in November and December during the estate’s “Mount Vernon by Candlelight” programs. Tour the Mansion with character guides and enjoy festive fireside caroling while sipping cider and eating cookies. Aladdin the Christmas camel will be there, too!

Tickets to this rain or shine event are required and may be purchased online here.

Dec 14-15, 2018
Christmas Illuminations
Stunning fireworks over the Potomac River are accompanied by visits from George and Martha Washington. Enjoy music from local choirs, snuggle by the bonfire, and sip hot cocoa or cider during this very special Christmas event! Learn the 18th-century process of making chocolate, or go shopping at the Shops at Mount Vernon for all your holiday gift giving needs!

Tickets for both the fireworks and tour, or fireworks only, can be purchased online here.

Mt. Vernon also offers tours of the Mansion, built in 1735 and expanded over five decades to 21 rooms (see a virtual tour here), outbuildings, gardens and grounds, heritage breed animals, Pioneer Farm, and more! Plan your visit here and see how much estimated time it will take for each feature.

Plan ahead and visit on a day with special events, including Story Time in Hands-on-History, Tribute at the Tomb, special children’s activities, and more.

George Washington’s Mount Vernon is open 365 days a year and is located at 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy., Mount Vernon, VA 22121.
