<< More From Moss Building & Design

Dear Moss Building & Design,
I have too many home projects on my to-do list and can never get them all done. How can I stay focused and achieve my design goals in the New Year?
Dear Dulles Mom,
With the New Year sneaking up on us, it’s great that you’re starting to think of your design goals for next year. While many New Year’s resolutions get dropped after the first month, your vision for a home design project doesn’t have to be one of them. It is possible to accomplish all of your renovation resolutions with MOSS’ Holiday Head Start program. Until January 31, 2018, enjoy no interest and no payments for 6 months for all qualifying remodeling projects.
If you want a few actionable ways to get started, these five tips can help make sure your design goals don’t fall by the wayside:
Don’t Set Too Many Goals at Once
The thought of a fresh, clean slate excites us, but don’t overwhelm yourself with a huge honey-do list. To avoid feeling overwhelmed and giving up, have a realistic expectation of what you’re going to accomplish this year. Begin with the most important projects and prioritize by size, cost, or longevity.
Understand How You’re Going to Get There
Unfortunately, most people think about the end goal, but don’t consider how they’re going to get there. Remodeling a home takes a lot of hard work and research, not magic. While you can hire a design company to bring your vision to life from a blank canvas, it’s best if you gather resources to show them what you’d like your home to look like.
Create a Vision Board
Pinterest is made for collaging. Find photos and make a vision board for your ideal kitchen, living room, bathroom, or bedroom. Also include images with specific design elements you like, such as certain types of lighting or fixtures. Use these pictures to motivate yourself and bring them to your design meeting, so your contractor has a clear understanding of what you want.
Be Flexible
Life happens. It’s great to have a schedule and step-by-step plan for your home design goals, but be flexible with everything to avoid getting frustrated, especially if unforeseen remodeling challenges arise. Before chalking up your New Year goals as a distant dream, understand that it’s OK to take a break and reschedule a remodeling contractor. It’s also a good idea to have a backup plan (or keep saving up) for when you can’t afford your first option for tile.
Stop Procrastinating
Long-term goals are the enemy of goal achievement. Many people fall victim to complacency after the first month of goal setting, especially if they set lengthy goals without smaller goals to achieve the larger dream. Get started now, even if it’s a small project, so that several months from now you feel accomplished at having moved toward reaching your goal. Avoid procrastination by revisiting your vision board and staying involved in your project.
