FUTURES — An Innovative Exploration of the Future

<< More Events

For its 175th anniversary, the Smithsonian is looking forward! FUTURES is the first building-wide exploration of the future on the National Mall! FUTURES spans 32,000-square-feet inside the Arts + Industries Building and will be on view until July 6, 2022.

FUTURES features a vast array of interactives, artworks, technologies, and ideas that are glimpses into humanity’s next chapter. Smell a molecule. Clean your clothes in a wetland. Meditate with an AI robot. Travel through space and time. Watch water being harvested from the air. Become an emoji.

The FUTURES is yours to decide, debate, delight! The Smithsonian invites you to dream big and imagine not just one future, but many possible futures on the horizon!

Visit daily, or enjoy a special opportunity:

FUTURE PLAY LAB

Carlos Carmonamedina
Feb 15-Mar 1, 2022
For the FUTURES Play Lab, illustrator Carlos Carmonamedina shares five new illustrations of the Smithsonian Arts + Industries Building (AIB) created through his Futurist-in-Residence project, transporting visitors on a journey from past visions of the future, through AIB today, and beyond.

Visitors are invited to take a postcard and write a note to their future selves — one, five, or ten years from now. Share a memory, advice for your future self, or a joke from the past that might give you a chuckle in the future. What message would future you want to receive? Learn more.

Cyborg Arts Foundation
March 3-31, 2022

Interactive sculptures will invite visitors for a cyborg sensory experience!

Working against the typical notion that cyborgs are more machine than human, this residency experience aims to demonstrate how much of the cyborg arts community is using new technologies to bring themselves closer to nature and more in harmony with the holistics of the natural world. Learn more.
