This summer, the National Building Museum’s Great Hall becomes a monumental indoor playground with larger-than-life experiences, creative challenges, and interactive fun!

The Playground opens July 3-August 30, 2026, and transforms the museum’s iconic Great Hall into a monumental, sculptural landscape that reimagines the familiar experience of parks and playgrounds — with a delightful twist.

Created in partnership with New York-based design firm Snarkitecture — the studio behind the museum’s beloved The Beach (2015) and Fun House (2018) installations — The Playground features nine distinct activation areas designed for all ages. Think rock climbing, a 50-foot circular basketball court, a 100-foot obstacle course, wavy maze-like walls, a tot spot for younger explorers, and more. Everything is built from birch plywood, with flooring made from recycled Nike shoes — a nod to the thoughtful design that goes into the everyday spaces we often take for granted.

The installation also ties into America’s 250th anniversary, celebrating how the places we create together shape our shared story as a community. Beyond The Playground itself, the museum will host public programs throughout the summer, including Late Night events with music, food, and drinks; storytimes; and hands-on workshops.
