Chincoteague Island’s world-famous pony swim is one piece of a magical weeklong event and there’s going to be plenty to see and do!
From July 22-28, 2023, visit Chincoteague Island for festivities, including a Fireman’s Carnival and fireworks, free movie showings of Misty of Chincoteague, a beach walk (July 24, 2023), the annual pony parade, and more! Enjoy a variety of pony-related events happening each day, kicking off with the annual pony herd roundup!
You won’t want to miss seeing the “Saltwater Cowboys” guide a beautiful herd of wild ponies from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island in what is known as the majestic Pony Swim (July 26, 2023) — the highlight of a week full of festivities that marks the 97th annual event.
As the state of Virginia’s only resort island, Chincoteague Island makes a great drivable destination for those looking to escape to the beautiful beaches of the Eastern Shore! Thanks to the 1961 premiere of Misty of Chincoteague, the small fishing village became famous and has turned into the serene vacation spot many know and love today!
Though the island is only 7 miles long and 3 miles wide, it still boasts plenty of places to eat, stay, and shop! Go crabbing, rent a bike, or take a guided nature tour before taking part in one of the island’s small community events!
